Life and Experiences

Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Some fun facts and anecdotes from your life.

I am originally a Syrian businesswoman, holding a Serbian nationality from my mother who was from Belgrade. I have a busy life, a long CV. I used to live and conduct business in Syria, and in 2012 I moved together with my children to Dubai where I started a new totally different business.
Will share with you a “fact” about myself which can be considered as an anecdote:
Being extremely busy, and thinking about dozens of issues at same moment, and fulfilling different tasks, I often have to hide some precious stuff in a hurry (I.E before traveling, or before the cleaner comes) and being busy by thinking of so many issues: I do not pay attention where I hide these precious stuff!!!!!! It happened with me several times which made me decide to take picture of the place I hided in the stuff and share it with my children in order to remind me where I put them.
The 1st time I hided money in an empty box of antibiotics inside our pharmacy and we went on vacation. When I came back, I could not remember where the place was, until a day came after 2 years when I decided to clean the pharmacy and found a box full of money!!!!

Where are you from originally? What are some of your favorite memories as a child?

My father is Syrian, and my mother is Serbian. This mixture between cultures and religions in an Arabic country gave me some strength in my personality.
I always remember our summer holidays spent as a family abroad. We were travelling on yearly basis to Europe, visiting all historical places, getting to better know the culture of each country, and enjoying being together. I also remember my primary school and all my dear friends, especially that I kept in touch with many classmates and we meet from time to time. The village that was owned by my father with all the different animals in there, are always in my heart as we were spending the weekends there, enjoying the nature. Not to forget the bungalow on the seaside in Latakia (my hometown) where we were spending the whole summer: swimming, playing, enjoying healthy sunny life.
My favorite moments were when visiting the elderly people house or the orphanage with the Scout, being an active member in this great organization.

How do you maintain the balance between your professional and personal life?

It is not easy to do it, but being in business field for the last 40 years and having 2 children and now 3 grandchildren whose company I really enjoy: I managed to find the perfect balance which fits me but might not fit another business woman. In my business life, I decided to have daily not only a “to do list” but also a “priority list” so that I know my priorities, accomplish all, then start with other tasks. Then family comes, and in the last rank comes my social life. It was my personal decision to reduce my social life to the minimum and to spend a quality time with the ones I love  instead of loosing time and energy with quantity of people whose company is with no added value, even emotionally..
The balance is finding the way which makes us feel comfortable, happy, productive, and most importantly: satisfied..
It was my decision to give priority to my work and to my family, and I never regretted it..

What do you do to relax? Any therapy you would like to share?

The best relaxation time for me is having a full body massage session, a facial treatment: I need to pamper myself from time to time, and my body needs some care, otherwise I will not be able to regain my energy and restart my “full speed” life next day.
It is rarely that I am in bad mood, but when it happens I like to sit in front of the sea and just watch its beautiful blue color.. It makes me feel so good..

They say that first impressions last and are made in the first few seconds of meeting someone. What personal attributes convey a positive first impression to you?

I always say: “You will never get a second chance to give the first impression”.
I count a lot on the first impression as it reflects the character of a person. It applies on both personal and business levels.
Usually, and after having this long life experience, I can easily read people from the first meeting. They can hide themselves behind a “mask” for a while, but it does not take long time to discover their real face. A positive impression can be felt in the heart, soul, and while shaking hands.
“Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after an experience with you become your trademark”.

Which people helped you to get where you are today and what did they do for you?

It is mainly my father under whose umbrella I was working during 31 years in same office: I gained all my business experience from him and I owe him all my success.
My mother played as well an important role, as she was continuously pushing me forward.
Mohammad and Rania my children played a great positive role in encouraging me and facilitating my tasks which were divided between my work and my home. They were and are still making me feel how proud they are of my achievements and success.

Often people find inspiration from great thinkers, writers and prolific people in history. What is your favorite quote and why is that quote noteworthy?

  • No matter how exhausting life could be, don’t bend. Some lean on you.
  • Think Global, NOT Local
  • You can, you will…. End of story….
  • Achievers were searching for the circumstances they wanted when they did not find them: they made them..
  • TRY AND FAIL BUT NEVER FAIL TO TRY
  • Work for a cause, not for applause.
  • And my favorite one is what Mrs. Nancy Regan said: “A WOMAN IS LIKE A TEA BAG: YOU CANNOT TELL HOW STRONG SHE IS UNTIL SHE IS IN HOT WATER”.
  • Aspire to inspire before you expire
  • Life is similar to a boxing game: defeat is not declared when you fall when you refuse to get up.
