As far I can remember, and my parents will corroborate that, I´ve always enjoyed debating different ideas and getting involved defending issues close to my heart. Throughout high school and my senior years, I was either the class representant, or part of a students' association group dealing with contentious matters. I learned that I was well-spoken, persuasive, and tenacious. In addition to that, I have a passion for continuous learning and understanding different point of views; a career path in law came very naturally but it wasn't until I started working with financial crimes that I really found my true calling and passion.
I´m a cartoon lover - Justice League is my favorite. I remember watching it and I would daydream about becoming Wonder Woman so I could save the world from evil.
I moved to Canada without speaking English, with no family or friends, and limited resources. Moving to another country in those circumstances was the most difficult challenge that I have ever put myself through. It was, however, the most rewarding. I had no one to count on but myself, and I had no option but to be resilient and resourceful. There were many unsettling moments; I doubted myself often. However, my stubborn personality kept telling that there was no other way but to conquer my goals. Through all those experiences, I learnt to appreciate the simple life pleasures and live my life in a way that honors my values.
Successful investigations require careful and methodical planning, even when you are an expert on the subject. The habit of devising a detailed written plan for each case helps me to check my assumptions and uncover information or red flags that otherwise I might have missed it.
"There is no friend as loyal as a book," wrote Ernest Hemingway; books have always been my best friend. It is difficult to isolate one specific book, but one of extraordinary impact was 'The Little Prince' by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. The message in this book is one that we adults desperately need: we drown ourselves in work, vanity, and domination, and we neglect the important things in life. I read this book more than 20 times until now, and I still read it now and then.
Aristotle said: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." When I set goals for myself, I know I will succeed not because I'm unique in any way but because I will not stop until I succeed. I'm very comfortable with my shortcomings because I know I will overcome them through my tenacious disposition.
To me it’s integrity - someone who is deep committed to do the right thing, for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. It would be challenging for me to work with someone whose motivations, or moral principles, I question. Further, when the leader has integrity, what follows is loyalty from those around them.
Information technology is one avenue for fraudsters, among others. As technology becomes more advanced, fraudulent schemes will become more complex. The impact of cybercrime - one single event - can have devastating consequences. Take, for example, the recent data breaches we have learnt. These events have cost business millions of dollars and shaken customers’ trust. To mitigate the risk, companies need to invest in detection tools but also people and policies to detecting those attacks.
With the proliferation of online tools and services through the internet and smartphones, the elderly are increasingly at risk of cyber fraud in this digital age. Many lack computer and internet skills and may not possess awareness of the risks. As a result, they become targets of cyber criminals. They are particularly vulnerable to internet phishing, identity theft, charity scams, cyber romance, and scams in which fraudsters claim to be government officials. To mitigate the victimization risk, family and friends must educate seniors on how to safely use their devices and access the services they need. The best protection is awareness about online scams trends, red flags, and how personal information can be protected.
In such situations, families and friends have an important role to play, be it in helping seniors to better recognize common online scams and red flags, or simply spending some time to help walk them through their new devices.
We tend to see the world and people through our eyes and personal beliefs. To uncover relevant information, it is of paramount importance that investigators put their assumptions and prejudice aside.
