Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Some fun facts and anecdotes from your life.

I live in New York city and a marketer at heart. For more than 20 years, I have worked in a wide variety of industries, media, tech, consumers goods and pharmaceutical. During this time, I spent the majority of my career in digital, which was very rewarding to see and participate in the growth of this area. Some more interesting jobs I held in the early part of my career included:

Program Director of my University’s radio station

Process Server : To deliver or “serve” legal documents to a defendant or person involved in a court case. Challenging because they often try to dodge receiving the documents!

Record company marketing representative. I was able to hang out with some very interesting musical artists.

Where are you from originally? What are some of your favorite memories as a child?

I grew up in the Detroit, Michigan area which was an interesting mix of urban and rural settings. I enjoyed summers spent outside, playing sports and exploring. It was also amazing to be in a community where people could work with their hands and create things.

How do you maintain the balance between your professional and personal life?

This is always a challenge in a world that requires to be constantly connected. I think it’s important to actively manage time as a precious commodity and that means making harsh decisions about prioritizing your time. Rather than setting fixed work hours, I think it’s important to set goals and selectively focus on items that push towards that end rather being occupied with unimportant tasks. This may make you unpopular, but it’s the smarter way of working.

What challenges do you expect to face in the future and how will you tackle them?

I expect the speed of innovation to continue to increase and automated technology will lead rather support humans in certain jobs. Combine this with an ever increasingly transient culture and focus on the superficial, I think transacting business will be a challenge.

My focus has been and will continue to be building enduring solutions that are several chess moves ahead of where the world is today while creating deep personal relationships that are built on transparency and trust.

Did your career turn out just the way you wanted it to?

It’s turned out better! To be honest, when I graduated from university, I really wasn’t sure of the path ahead…..and perhaps if I had, and maybe it would’ve been less exciting! Of course a job in “digital” anything didn’t exist and weren’t even degrees you could earn in this area. Instead, I did a lot of self-learning, sought mentoring and explored emerging opportunities. While it was not always easy or the “safe” path, I have found both financial success and mental stimulation .

In the early day of washingtonpost.com I part of team that forged new ground in the digital age for the Post, setting a path for its sustainability and reputation for excellence that exists today. Where many historic titans of the newspaper have failed, The Washington Post has flourished in the digital age.

Having worked as a Lead for the Taproot Foundation, I was able to help many small non-profits improve their ability to market themselves to potential donors as well as communicate effectively to prospective clients using digital channels. Having received a lot of positive feedback from Executive Directors and Boards, these projects were some of the most rewarding of my career.

In your opinion, what is the essential personality trait to consider when hiring an executive-level employee?

Very simply integrity. When someone reaches an executive level, they generally have already demonstrated competency and a work ethic. We see so many scandals and now a backlash against companies that don’t operate ethically. It’s important for someone who is operating both internally and externally to communicate and live the values of the company.

Often people find inspiration from great thinkers, writers and prolific people in history. What is your favorite quote and why is that quote noteworthy?

“The adventure of life is to learn. The purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The opportunity of like is to serve. The secret of life is to dare. The spice of life is to befriend. The beauty of life is to give.

William Arthur Ward

I adore this quote because it puts life into context, which is not always easy to do — the answers to what motivates us, unlocks our long term passions, and addresses carpe diem!
