Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Some fun facts and anecdotes from your life.

I am a 27-year old female marketing professional living in Hawaii. I work as the Digital Marketing Manager for an outdoor tour company here called And You Creations. When I'm not promoting Hawaii's stunning activities, you can find me out on the mountains or in the ocean myself. Hiking and freediving are two of my favorite pass times. With 52 weekends every year, I like to think that I have about 100 annual vacation days just by living here. I aim to take full advantage of each and every one of them.

Where are you from originally? What are some of your favorite memories as a child?

I grew up in two small towns in two small towns in Wisconsin, splitting time between my mother's and father's houses. I spent most of my time outside as a child. I was always happiest in nature. Some of my fondest memories are white water rafting down the Wolf River.

My Dad would take me up into a remote Native American reservation in Menominee County to white water raft there when I was a kid. There were days that we headed up there to raft, but the company was closed without notice. On those days, we would float down the rapids with nothing but our bodies, squealing with excitement and just the right amount of fear as the water picked up speed.

Those days exploring the river in Wisconsin instilled in me a love for nature and a need to protect it.

Would you like to share one of your memorable pictures?

And You Creations gave me the incredible opportunity this past year to travel to South Korea for a travel expo. I worked with our Korean marketing team to help share information about the tours, and I also had one free day to explore Seoul.

The couple on the left had just purchased a dolphin tour for their honeymoon. Our Korean marketing specialist and I were celebrating on the right.

I spent part of my free day outside of Seoul hiking to the top of a mountain for sunset. The views from the mountains were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I'd love to go back someday.

How do you maintain the balance between your professional and personal life?

When I'm at work, I'm all in with my work. No distractions, no twiddling my thumbs. I keep an ongoing list of tasks and projects, which I obsessively work to keep checking off during the workweek.

But when I'm at home, I'm all in with my family and loved ones. I think taking time to unwind and cut loose during the weekend is important to maintain a healthy mindset during the week. And the time that I spend enjoying Hawaii on the weekends with my loved ones serves my cause in marketing those adventures.

What do you do to relax? Any therapy you would like to share?

I use my weekly planner to slot away time every week for my personal hobbies. On the weekends I usually do an outdoor physical activity one of the days and then take time on the other day to sing or paint. Taking time for this is so important to me that I write it down in my planner as a task to check off, just as important as any other.

While I'm at work, I've also learned to take time to unwind. My marketing team and I take a break every hour to do one minute of simple exercise or stretching. It keeps the blood flowing and the mind fresh.

They say that first impressions last and are made in the first few seconds of meeting someone. What personal attributes convey a positive first impression to you?

It impresses me when someone is able to show genuine engagement upon the first meeting. I appreciate it when people have an ability to make others feel at ease from that very first moment, be it with a hug, an attentive gaze or a warm tone of voice. And I'm drawn to people who ask questions or follow up in a way that demonstrates that they're fully listening to what I'm saying.

I think some people get so sucked into their work that they forget how to be human. Some people approach me with a rehearsed speech or a tired pitch. I appreciate it when people approach me first as a person, and as a professional second.

Which people helped you to get where you are today and what did they do for you?

Although I stand on the shoulders of so many giants, there are three individuals who stand out in my mind as people who made a tremendous impact on my life professionally.

During college, I stretched myself incredibly thin. At one point I was going to school full time, working as a waitress part-time, writing for local papers, interning and co-directing an A Cappella choir. Not to mention trying to keep up a social life. I wasn't doing any of those jobs 100% and my mental health was suffering. I will never forget one morning on the heels of a particularly draining week, during which one professor's office told me I hadn't received an award for a profile piece I had submitted. He patted me on the back and told me he was proud of me, even though I had failed. Professor Keith Moyer saw talent in me when others only saw me falling short. And he continues to support my writing to this day.

The next person to see my potential was Jason Walter. He was my boss at the Hawaii Opera Theatre, and he trusted me with ultimate creative freedom. He let me take communication strategies that hadn't been changed in decades and run with them. Although the company didn't have a budget for video campaigns, he allowed me to write storyboards and scripts in case they ever did. Jason's limitless leadership allowed me to explore new ways to tell stories and reach an audience.

Lastly, And You Creations President Kaina Neuman has given me professional opportunities that I couldn't have imagined a couple of years ago. Less than 6 months into working with the company, he promoted me to manage the marketing department. His trust in my skillset has allowed me to pursue many firsts – first time designing a website, first time overseeing a departmental budget and first time managing digital ads. And he has invested not only in my marketing career, but also other skills like coding and Japanese.

If not for the kindness and generosity of these people, I may not be where I am today.

Who or what inspires you?

I'm inspired by authenticity and genuineness. Marketing can too often be a sea of selling out. When something feels real and true, it stands out. In music, they call it soul.

That can come in the form of taking risks. It can also come from earning authority. But most often, I believe it comes from honesty and integrity.

Professional Career

Can you briefly share your professional journey?

My professional journey has certainly been an interesting one. I studied journalism and global studies at the University of Minnesota. While I was there, I worked consistently as a barista and waitress. I also wrote about health and the environment for the Minnesota Daily, the Pioneer Press and the UMN BioTechnology Institute.

The Midwest never really suited me, so after college, I save up money from waitressing and moved to Hawaii. Finding work in journalism proved a challenge at first, so I had to continue waitressing. My first journalism-related job was a 6-month internship for Kaiser Permanente Health Care. I learned a great deal about event planning as I watched my coworkers prepare for the Great Aloha Run – an event with more than 25,000 attendees. I was also able to shadow a social media manager and a data analyst, giving me my first peek into the world of marketing. As they showed me the ropes, I found that marketing stimulated my creative and competitive side more than writing news ever had.

When a marketing internship opened up at the Hawaii Opera Theatre, I jumped on it. It was part-time, so I was still supplementing my income with a number of side hustles. My side work was incredibly varied, ranging from singing live to teaching painting, performing as a princess for kids parties and more. Working at the Hawaii Opera Theatre with a small staff let me see much more of the full picture than I had been able to see at Kaiser Permanente. But juggling all of the jobs (at one time I was working 4 at once) was exhausting. I knew that I needed to find a full-time position.

And that's how I found the marketing position at And You Creations. Initially, I was hired as a social media manager and an underwater photography assistant. My boss took me under his wing and taught me new marketing skills like web design and graphic design. But, to my surprise, two weeks into my position he left the company with no one to fill his shoes. I stepped up to the plate and was promoted to marketing manager. More than two years later, I feel fulfilled seeing the English-speaking market for And You Creations thrive under my leadership.

Did your career turn out just the way you wanted it to?

At 27 years old, I feel that I'm still pretty green in my career. There are skills that I have yet to learn and aspirations that I have yet to achieve. But I think my earliest visions of my career involved sharing my skills of communicating creatively in order to try to better society in one way or another. So in that respect, I have been able to do what I wanted to do.

What impact has your educational background had on your professional activities?

My college education didn't teach me how to manage a campaign budget. It didn't teach me how to design a website or optimize for SEO. It didn't teach me how to control a company's reputation.

What it taught me are the more fundamental concepts that are at the heart of all communications. My education taught me the questions every communications professional needs to ask: Who is my audience? What do they want? What stories do they want to tell and what stories do they need to hear? And journalism taught me the important lessons on the ethical and moral responsibilities of having such a communal voice.

Can you share some of the interesting projects you are working on these days?

And You Creations just recently launched its newest tour product, Ocean and You, which is an entertaining sunset cruise along the coast of Waikiki. I am also currently working to gain visibility for the company's boat charter offerings and retail, which means several campaigns are in the works.

One project I'm excited about is a video messaging campaign for our swimming with dolphins tour. We will be working with an animator to create an explainer video to share how to act in the water with the dolphins and how we work to abide by NOAA's regulations. I hope that this will help to standardize communications for the tour, while reaching all ages and languages equally.
On a more personal note, I may soon be creating a website with information on local hikes in Hawaii. Proceeds from the site will benefit trail maintenance and safety if all goes according to plan.

Leadership Advice

What advice would you give to anyone seeking a career in your industry?

In communications, you need to deeply understand people. Learn from people constantly. Pay attention to how they learn what they talk about and where they go to learn. Marketing requires empathy and understanding, but it also demands strategy and competitive nature to stay on top of a constantly shifting landscape.

It's also necessary to take care of which product you choose to represent. You have to aim to know and love your product more than anyone else. For marketing to be believable, you should believe it yourself. If you don't, it might not be the right industry for you.

Good time management is also absolutely essential. One of my old bosses once told me that marketing is one of those jobs that everyone thinks they can do well. So an endless task list will only grow longer as everyone around submits their contributions. Justifying priorities is a daily act. Make peace with the infinite to-do list, but also work to earn authority on which tasks should come first.

What do you think about Executives Diary?

I think it bridges the gap between professional life and personal life in a novel way. A resume or LinkedIn is a great way to get a glimpse at someone's career, but a platform like this allows professionals the ability to go a bit deeper and see the sides that have shaped each of those bullet points on the resume. Those stories are often the most important of all.
